]]>Both of my parents came to Arizona a few years ago to visit me and see the area for the first time. After bringing them to the Grand Canyon I brought them here to Monument Valley on the Arizona / Utah border.

They were there with me as I was photographing this incredible sunset. I recall seeing another photographer there that evening - he had just missed this sunset, arriving as I was folding up the legs to my tripod and preparing to leave. What a sunset he missed!!

This is a mulit-photo stitched panoramic providing a nearly 180 degree view.

Annual Eclipse in Santa Fe, NM

]]>Last night I had the opportunity to photograph the annular eclipse. I didn't have the chance to drive to an exotic location due to scheduling, so I had to settle for my backyard here in Santa Fe, NM.

Fortunately I had a little bit of cloud cover to add some interest to the sky. While the clouds did partially block my view, without them I would have had just a simple and boring shot of the sun.

Horseshoe Bend

]]>I photographed this panoramic of Horseshoe Bend in Page, AZ in 2007. It was photographed after sunset with my Canon 5D and 24-70mm lens and is a multi-photo stitched panoramic. Split neutral density filters were used to balance the extreme brightness levels between the sky and water.

In order to photograph this, I had to have my tripod legs within inches of the edge of the cliff wall, some 1400 feet above the Colorado River.

]]>A total of 21 separate photos went into creating this panoramic image photographed at Joshua Tree National Park in California.

Seven different compositions were made as I rotated the camera to provide me with about a 140 degree view. Each of the seven different compositions were photographed 3 times at different exposure settings - one for highlights, one for midtones, and one for the shadows. I used Photoshop for the stitching and Photomatix Pro for the HDR tonemapping.

]]>This was photographed in 2008 in Zion National Park in Utah. On this particular hike I started in the dark well before sunrise. By the time I got to this location the light was perfect - nice and soft. When I returned to this location on the hike out it looked completely different being bathed in direct sunlight. In fact it looked so much different than in the beautiful morning light I almost didn't even recognize it.

]]>This was photographed at sunset in a very remote part of northern Arizona in the Vermillion Cliffs. I was told by a geologist once that he belives this area once was sand dunes in the Jurassic Period.

This is a stitched panorama, the result of a number of photographs combined to give me this wind angle of view.

]]>The sun rises at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah in May of 2007. I had done some scouting the evening before, hiking along the rim looking for good viewpoints. I found this location that evening, made a note of the spot, went back to my tent for the evening, and hiked back to it in the dark the following morning to be ready for this sunrise.

A total of 7 photographs were stitched together to give me this nearly 180 degree panoramic view.
