I spent a while looking for the perfect boot with the perfect background and set up my 300mm f2.8 lens on my tripod when I found it for a tight shot with limited depth of field.

Careful framing and focusing allowed me to keep the entire fence and boot in perfect focus and shooting at f8 allowed me to reduce the background to a pleasing blur allowing the fence and boot to stand out even more.

This is a 3-photo HDR image that was processed with Lightroom 5, Nik Software's HDR Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro 2 and Photoshop.

In fact I photographed this with my students during a photo workshop Christine and I were teaching in Santa Fe/Taos in 2011.

While this was photographed in 2011, I didn't process and enhance the photo until spring of 2012.

This was photographed with my Canon 5DMKII and 17-40mm lens. It is a 3-photo HDR image, meaning I took 3 different photos while my camera was on the tripod, changing the exposure in each to allow me to record details in the bright highlights and dark shadows.

I combined the 3 differently exposed photos into one image using Nik's HDR Efex Pro software. I also used Silver Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro 4, and Viveza 2 (use coupon code mattsuess to receive a discount on Nik's plugins) while enhancing the photo.

I also blended in a photo texture from FlyPaper Textures to complete the look.

I had to hide it from my mother in my closet. I never got to photograph my collection before I eventually had to get rid of it. I wonder if I had any of these...

Why do kids collect bottle caps? Do they still collect bottle caps? The person who had this nice little collection certainly wasn't a kid. I know for a fact though he is a kid at heart.

This was photographed during the Santa Fe workshop Christine Hauber and I in September, 2011. Using the HDR process and CEP4 I was able to control color and detail to get exactly what I was looking for with this image - a gritty, detail rich photo with muted color around the bottle caps.

A total of 56 control points were used in HDR Efex Pro to control color and brightness.

Equipment: Canon 5DmkII and 24-70mm lens, tripod

Processing: 3 photo HDR. Raws were processed in Lightroom. HDR Efex Pro was used for the HDR processing. Image was then processed with Color Efex Pro 4 using Detail Extractor and Tonal Contrast. Then a small adjustment in Topaz Adjust, minor curve tweak in Photoshop, and a last run into CEP4 for Pro Contrast.

From there I used Silver Efex Pro to desaturate much of the background and edges to separate the bike a little bit from the background, leaving color in certain areas that I liked - such as "The Other Woman" truck in the background.

I then used Color Efex Pro 4 software to bring out more detail, to add a slight vignette, and also to soften up some of the background a bit. Additional layer masking as well as dodging and burning in Photoshop.

Lastly, a very subtle photo texture from FlyPaper Textures was added to finish the look.

This muli-photo stitched panoramic was photographed during sunset at Powell Point on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

I waited the entire afternoon and evening in the mid-summer heat to photograph this scene. This is a 3-panel triptych panorama.

I originally thought I didn't get any great photographs this particular day as there were no dramatic clouds or light at sunset. But I later realized when editing my photos that I in fact did have a striking photo from that day. Instead of high contrast and bright colors, this sunset left me with quite beautiful and soft light, giving this photo a nice pastel feel with the soft colors.

Sometimes what you get is even better than what you expect.

You can read more about this photo trip to the Grand Canyon here.

"Powell Point Sunset" is a multi-photo stitched panorama photographed with my Canon 5D and 24-70mm lens.

We checked-in to our hotel in Flagstaff at midnight and checked out 5 hours later.

Arriving at the Rim just before sunrise, the morning was very windy and cold - temperatures were well below freezing and in the single digits. Wearing multiple layers with handwarmers in our gloves and shoes, I set up my camera and tripod and waited for the sun to appear above the horizon. Surrounded by a surprising number of spectators also braving the cold, we watched as the warm light from the sun slowly started to touch the highest peaks in the Canyon. It was an incredible sight seeing it for the first time. First one peak would light up, then another, then another. All the while the continuing brightness of the morning slowly and steadily increased giving more and more detail to the valley below.

Watching the Canyon awake and come to life quickly made us forget about the cold that morning and also went a long way in helping our decision to move to Arizona - a move we would make some nine months later.
